Picked my bike up today. After 8 miles on clock (about 5 miles of riding) I got an ABS error on screen. No other info (speed, gear I am in etc) so I stop and turn off bike. When I tried to start it again I get regular start up screen followed by “Immobilization Faileur” screen and will not start. I messed around for a bit waiting for Shop to come pick it up and was able to get it to start by turning it over just a split second after turning key to on position. Now operating as it should after turning off and on a couple of times.

Have told Shop I will try and ride home and see what happens.....

Will update later.

790 back to shop

Well I was able to ride bike for another 5 miles or so and then issues. Screen said there was a traction control failure and then when I tried to start it up again I got the ‘Immobilizer Faileur’ message and it would not start.

What I have found is that if you wait 20 minutes or so it will then return to functional (but likely only for another 5 miles...)

Bike went back to shop tonight and they will look into it tomorrow.

So frustrating as a new bike just received to showroom this month. I had read about issues with other forum members bikes but hoped as they were a moth or so ago that maybe KTM had fixed issue or let shops know how to make sure bikes were ok....

Right Now I am hoping that someone will come up with a way to hack the computer system to wipe out all the programming and let us have reliable systems!

Will update when I know more (and hopefully in better mood).

Hi,sorry to hear about these problems you guys/girls are having.
This is a strange one because as far as I know the UK bike is not fitted with an Immobiliser or at least not the 2018 bikes.
Although there is an Immobiliser shown on the spare parts list for the 790.The key on the UK bike is just a standard key and the bike comes with no Red master key as do other KTM,s that are fitted with an immobiliser.
Maybe the US spec bikes comes with an immobiliser as standard.
Hope you get the problems sorted so you can start enjoying your 790,s.
Good luck.
Ride Safe:)

This is interesting...

My bike came with 2 keys, both black (no red key) and dealer said the keys are not chipped.

Update:

New immobilizer will need to be ordered. KTM are saying it is an overheating issue with immobilizer. I agree! If immobilizer overheats on a near freezing day after 25 minutes of light traffic traveling at under 40mph this is an issue!

So sounds more like a design flaw, perhaps manufacturing flaw. KTM also mentioned something about insulation on or around the immobilizer (this is 2nd had to me from mechanic who spoke with KTM).

Will now wait after being able to taste my new bike for just 8 miles. Hope I get it back before too long!

Argghhhhhhhhhh! Pain pain pain.

I got my bike back on Monday and have ridden it everyday to work. Everything appears to be fixed. TC and ABS side bar lights go OFF once I start rolling. There were no comments left on my service invoice but the guy at the front desk feels that these alarms were from prep and set up of the bike for sale. They did not charge me for time because they said these alarms were a result of something the employee building the bike should have caught or corrected during set up.

Really liking the bike. The abrupt jumps on and off the throttle is unpleasant but not enough to give me heart burn. Would love to take it to the track once i break it in.

Hey Pdxsnap, did you get yours fixed and what was involved? I've got a 790 duke that's flashes up the immobiliser warning. my suspicion is it's heat related as it only seems to do it when the bike is hot. It's a UK bike.

Zippy,

I STILL do not have a bike. As previously mentioned I picked bike up March 2nd, got half way home before immobilizer failure and then shop took bike back. I do think you are right the issue is heat related. Apparently the location of the immobilizer and issues with mobilizer design (my guess, lack of heat shielding perhaps) result in issue. This occurred to me on a 50 degree day which to me says more a design issue as most people use bikes on nice 90 degree days and this would be a disaster!

Shop has said they got a new immobilizer in BUT it gave same issue and so are now going to try a second new unit. Shop has said they are also going to try moving the immobilizer to a new location further from engine to see if this helps. I have told them not to do this as I will not accept bike unless it works properly as it was designed to with immobilizer in factory location. It needs to work best it can otherwise a quick fix now will likely result in me being stranded on the side of the road on a 90 degree day this summer. I don't want that.

I want the bike and I want it to work, I have been waiting over a month for them to get it right...

Hope you get parts for yours in from shop quicker than it took to get mine and hope it works out. I have an exhaust and a bunch of other parts sitting in my garage for over a month now waiting to install.

Wow, that's crap. I am too absolutely convinced it is heat related - it's predictable and very repeatable. If I head out on roads where it'll never get warm enough to need the fan cooling cycle, it simply doesn't fail. If I do, after about 5 mins of the fan kicking in and back out, it'll fail.

Hope you get yours sorted... mine's back at the dealer, too.

I had the engine immobilizer fail on mine while it was still at the dealership. I'm in CA. Dealer told me the previous 2 bikes he sold didn't have this problem. They replaced and its ran great for about 125 miles so far.

Finally got bike back...

It has been as unpleasant a purchase as I have ever had. Immobilizer issue aside the shop dealing with issue have proven themselves quite impotent and lacking in any customer service skills. Ok, rant aside here is where my immobilizer issue is at now.

Bike was with dealer from day one of purchase through day 32 before they said it was fixed. To fix issue they say they tried a second immobilizer (this one also did not work) and then a third immobilizer that they also have told me they have mounted in a new position to better protect it from heat. This is concerning to me as this might help immobilizer work but I expect it to be a good enough unit that it works in its intended position. So I now have bike back with 59 miles on the odometer (I gave it back to them with 8 miles on it!). Also when bike was delivered to me it was in sport mode, not street as I had last had it. Little worried as to what sort of riding and testing this brand new bike has been through?!

Anyway, bike is in my garage on this rainy day getting some parts swapped (exhaust, mirrors, tail tidy, sliders etc). Once we have some better weather I will get out on it and see if any issues. I will be taking it to another dealer to get it inspected and make sure immobilizer is in correct position and nothing else has been messed up (I am not confident tin the abilities of mechanic from shop based on their evasiveness to my questions on immobilizers new position and also that they would not put back in normal position for me?). If it was easier to get a hold of these bikes I would have walked away and found another one.

Just happy to finally have a bike!

My Experience

2 small videos of my experience with the immobilizer. In the process of contacting the dealer again. I have already given them the bike once for this exact reason and they said it was a problem with how the bike was set up during unboxing/prep. I really love the 790 Duke but we need to figure out what this issue is.

Did you guys ever get this figured out? I have about 200 mi on my bike, had it unlocked on 3/21 and got it delivered on 3/22. The bike was in the shop though in Dec/Jan which is when I bought it. Luckily I haven't had this issue at all...hopefully I am beyond the mileage?!

Got my bike back after some 34 days in shop for fix (mostly waiting for part to arrive). Just took it for first quick ride today and no issue. Will do a longer ride this weekend (50 plus miles).

Video above is same issue I was having prior.

These videos show exactly the same experience I had. Bike hot for >5 mins or so (4-5 bars heat), errors flash up, then it won't start until cool again.

100% heat related, in my opinion!

Does anyone know where the immobiliser is located? I've had a poke around but can't see it

Registered as my dad just picked up his 790 last week. We went on a long ride that ended up in some heavy traffic (80+ degree weather in GA/SC): He shut the bike the down (I did the same on my Strom) and walked it a bit until having to restart and ride up a hill. Shortly after the restart, he caught my attention and mentioned an alert message about “immobilizer failure”. We shut the bikes off again, then his wouldn’t restart. I pushed his bike into the median and immediately googled it, where I watched the video posted recently from these threads. I disconnected the negative terminal, waited a minute, reconnected it, and it fired up.

We rode to the dealer, who ran diagnostics for about 30 minutes. They saw log of the errors, but said the bike was ok and that they couldn’t see anything wrong. Not ten minutes after leaving, it threw a CEL and immobilizer failure. We rode the remaining twenty miles to his house, and he’ll call the dealer again Monday.

Sorry to see others with the issue. Following the stories from here.

Glad you got it all sorted out and are up and running! Good to hear.

Spectre, that sucks! Makes for a bad day out. Sorry about that. It's curious that some have this problem and some don't....or maybe I haven't been that hot yet? I have no clue where the immobilizer is...but shouldn't it be mounted in the same spot on every bike?!
