I think the stock oil is to light, my bike (790) has a head shake when accelerating hard, not bad but would certainly like to get rid of it.Headshake, which is what the damper is designed to dampen, it a very fast movement side to side of the fork/bars.
As mentioned by @L8-apex, it is not something that is possible to recreate "manually".

snap ring pliers and ??? Soft jaw vice and dead blow hammer? how else you get it apart once the snap rings are off?I did 20w in my steering damper and it worked out great! Easy to do ,all you really need is snap ring pliers....
Is anyone elses steering dampener feel loose. Where it bolts into the bushing. Mine feels "SquishY" Is that normal?So once you have the snap ring and the washer ect pull the eyelet side all the way up the with a dead blow or similar give it a good tap Or two and it will pop the seal off ....there is a YouTube video out there that is really good.
