Just follow the instructions from Matris. Try max pre-load on your stock shock and see how it feels. That's with stock steering damper too btw. If you're doing full suspension upgrade: take the bike to a suspension shop. If you still insist on doing it yourself, remember to measure fork height with a digital caliper and write down your stock shock length and sag numbers.
I am turning my 790 in for an 890r. Going to buy the bike and swap parts off my 790. Then just sell it back to the dealer.

Swapped for 20 wt. oil. Not a lot of work. A bit messy. Will test ride to verify and report later.

Rode with the 20wt. oil today. Tried to get it to shake it's head with max accelerations and 100+ MPH speeds. It did not. I guess it is better. Will have to wait for the next track day to verify 100%
