You have the tapered nut on in the wrong direction. Flip it and align with the slots in the expansion collar. Install and snug it up. Hope that helps.

The slots on the collar mesh with the splines of the nut and are held secure while turning the screw. As you tighten the screw it'll draw in that tapered nut causing the collar to spread and wedge in the bar. The way you have it assembled in the photo would try to crush the collar likely breaking the screw or damaging something else.

I love the look of the mirrors below the bars but not sure if I'd like looking down to see behind me. Hope to get a set soon.
