The 1290 SD is a great bike, but much heavier. Having a 990 that is close in weight to the 790/890 will be very interesting.

Agree, but would it be useful ?
In my opinion, releasing a 990 now would mean that are not happy with the 790/890 platform, for whatever reasons.
Getting 10 or 15 hp more with the same goal and almost the same overall design would sound weird to me (the Hyper Scalpel ??)

It's a marketing strategy. KTM are trying achieve two things:

First, by making a big change to a model, current owners are more likely to buy the new uprated model than they would if the change was small. Very few 2020 and 2021 owners would bother to sell their bikes to get a 2022 as the models are virtually the same bike. Another 100 cc, and now people are more inclined to sell what they have and by the new one.

Secondly, they are slowly "nudging" their customer to climb the food change to go to a larger and more expensive motorcycle. Most "midsize bike" customers considered the 690 the midsize duke in the past. Now we consider the 890 the midsize. Soon we will consider 990 as midsize. In 2006 we thought of 990 cc as large.
