Immobilation Alert

Question about voltage limits...
After a very long wait, I picked up my 790 last weekend with 5 miles on the Odo. Rode tested the bike for another 3 miles while at the dealership — no issues except I wanted to ride more! Trailered home and installed a Battery tender SAE lead directly to the battery (has 15amp fuse between battery and lead). Trickel charged battery and went green within 5 minutes (yah!)
When weather finally cleared I set out for my REAL maiden voyage and received an Immobizer Alert not but 1000 ft from my driveway. Engine shut down. Could not restart.
Scrolling through the computer, lots of errors/codes were displayed (MTC and ABS Cornering). After a rest, the bike started but still threw errors including ABS Failure.
KTM Tech ran diagnostic this morning and reports no current errors and show one historical battery error.
1. Has anyone installed battery tender leads? Issues? Maybe I need a 10amp fuse on the BT Lead?
2. Does anyone have any idea of stator capacity/ amperage allowed? My Tech or Advisor doesn’t know.
3. Does anyone run heated gear on their 790?

Thanks in advance!

My electrical and technical knowledge is not able to answer this incident.
I have used a Tecmate Optimate 4 battery charger tester, and have had no problems.
I also have Gerbing gloves powered straight from the battery, again no problems.
Just make sure that everything is connected well and tightened.

my battery tender lead has a 5amp fuse
I run heated grips but not gloves or clothing
if you use the aux power supply this is fused

whats the current requirement for your heated gear?

how did you wire them up?

Started flashing immobilizer failure after 15 minutes of riding. Pulled off to check the bike and after shutdown the bike would crank, but not start. Anyone else have this issue?

Pic of the screen

We are having the same issue. Mine did it after 15 min of riding and 41 miles. Bike would run, but would not restart after cycling key off. Did start after 30 min of trying. What is your doing now?

I disconnected the SAE plug that I connected directly to the battery. I let it reset for 24 hours plus - rode 45 miles this afternoon with no issues.

I'm thinking the Euro map is different from the US map? I'm assuming you have a US version?

I'm looking for a KTM accessory plug for ACC 1 that has an SAE on the other end- can only find the heated grips (that will go into ACC 2) and an accessory plug with a USB on the other end. The Manual states to use aligator clips for battery trickle charge - that's a pain in the arse.

I am following this thread. Just bought a 790. Drove it to the court house for registration. On the way back home I got ABS & MTC failure, Immobilizer Failure, and Key Failure. I was able to restart the bike after a few minutes on the first try. I did notice that the mph disappeared after the failures were acknowledged. The bike has less that 20 miles on it.

Picked my bike up today. After 8 miles on clock (about 5 miles of riding) I got an ABS error on screen. No other info (speed, gear I am in etc) so I stop and turn off bike. When I tried to start it again I get regular start up screen followed by “Immobilization Faileur” screen and will not start. I messed around for a bit waiting for Shop to come pick it up and was able to get it to start by turning it over just a split second after turning key to on position. Now operating as it should after turning off and on a couple of times.

Have told Shop I will try and ride home and see what happens.....

Will update later.

790 back to shop

Well I was able to ride bike for another 5 miles or so and then issues. Screen said there was a traction control failure and then when I tried to start it up again I got the ‘Immobilizer Faileur’ message and it would not start.

What I have found is that if you wait 20 minutes or so it will then return to functional (but likely only for another 5 miles...)

Bike went back to shop tonight and they will look into it tomorrow.

So frustrating as a new bike just received to showroom this month. I had read about issues with other forum members bikes but hoped as they were a moth or so ago that maybe KTM had fixed issue or let shops know how to make sure bikes were ok....

Right Now I am hoping that someone will come up with a way to hack the computer system to wipe out all the programming and let us have reliable systems!

Will update when I know more (and hopefully in better mood).

Hi,sorry to hear about these problems you guys/girls are having.
This is a strange one because as far as I know the UK bike is not fitted with an Immobiliser or at least not the 2018 bikes.
Although there is an Immobiliser shown on the spare parts list for the 790.The key on the UK bike is just a standard key and the bike comes with no Red master key as do other KTM,s that are fitted with an immobiliser.
Maybe the US spec bikes comes with an immobiliser as standard.
Hope you get the problems sorted so you can start enjoying your 790,s.
Good luck.
Ride Safe:)

Update:

New immobilizer will need to be ordered. KTM are saying it is an overheating issue with immobilizer. I agree! If immobilizer overheats on a near freezing day after 25 minutes of light traffic traveling at under 40mph this is an issue!

So sounds more like a design flaw, perhaps manufacturing flaw. KTM also mentioned something about insulation on or around the immobilizer (this is 2nd had to me from mechanic who spoke with KTM).

Will now wait after being able to taste my new bike for just 8 miles. Hope I get it back before too long!

Argghhhhhhhhhh! Pain pain pain.

I got my bike back on Monday and have ridden it everyday to work. Everything appears to be fixed. TC and ABS side bar lights go OFF once I start rolling. There were no comments left on my service invoice but the guy at the front desk feels that these alarms were from prep and set up of the bike for sale. They did not charge me for time because they said these alarms were a result of something the employee building the bike should have caught or corrected during set up.

Really liking the bike. The abrupt jumps on and off the throttle is unpleasant but not enough to give me heart burn. Would love to take it to the track once i break it in.

Zippy,

I STILL do not have a bike. As previously mentioned I picked bike up March 2nd, got half way home before immobilizer failure and then shop took bike back. I do think you are right the issue is heat related. Apparently the location of the immobilizer and issues with mobilizer design (my guess, lack of heat shielding perhaps) result in issue. This occurred to me on a 50 degree day which to me says more a design issue as most people use bikes on nice 90 degree days and this would be a disaster!

Shop has said they got a new immobilizer in BUT it gave same issue and so are now going to try a second new unit. Shop has said they are also going to try moving the immobilizer to a new location further from engine to see if this helps. I have told them not to do this as I will not accept bike unless it works properly as it was designed to with immobilizer in factory location. It needs to work best it can otherwise a quick fix now will likely result in me being stranded on the side of the road on a 90 degree day this summer. I don't want that.

I want the bike and I want it to work, I have been waiting over a month for them to get it right...

Hope you get parts for yours in from shop quicker than it took to get mine and hope it works out. I have an exhaust and a bunch of other parts sitting in my garage for over a month now waiting to install.

Wow, that's crap. I am too absolutely convinced it is heat related - it's predictable and very repeatable. If I head out on roads where it'll never get warm enough to need the fan cooling cycle, it simply doesn't fail. If I do, after about 5 mins of the fan kicking in and back out, it'll fail.

Hope you get yours sorted... mine's back at the dealer, too.
