Best exhaust for the 890R

Hey everyone,

Im wondering what you would recommend as the best exhaust for my new 890R. I haven't even heard it run yet as it's still being built. However I like the sound of an aftermarket exhaust. I put the Leo Vince on LV1 on my 390 and it made it sound better with the baffle pulled out. Just wondering what u guys think. I am sorry if there is already a thread about this. I'm new here and don't know all the ways to navigate it yet.

What slip on is this? I know it will probably reduce power but the aesthetics really set the bike off. Have you ran it with passenger pegs or had any issue with heat on your heel?
‘haha that aesthetics fit if your going for the ratbag pep boys parking lot mod look…

I like the minimal exhaust bc the biggest flaw to the duke 890 in my opinion is the can! Id really like to see a can replace the cat in the factory spot and the pipe exit like your "pep boys parking lot mod" but no one makes that. Then the low exit cans kill lean angle and the high exit short cans become a hazard for a passenger and the rear tail/tucked turn signal. So im thinking of a titanium version of the straight pipe you put on your bike even if it doesnt give more power.

that thing would be pointing right at a passengers foot, it looks like it would be too close to a riders heel when the peg is on the ball of your foot. Might have me confused I have a Wings exhaust and still have the Catalyst. I’d consider doing the Arrow decat as it has a minimal resonator, but I do agree with you it would be interesting if there was a decat option that made full use of that space to act as a resonance chamber and tone down the bikes bark when using a performance slip on.
I’ve not seen any evidence that smaller cans cause power loss, I think it’s pub talk that. I know it’s a different bike but look at the 1290 Superduke Akrapovic v the stock exhaust, doesn’t make sense does it ?
There are a few Dyno results on YOUTUBE that show some of the shorter low volume pipes killing off top end power.

Kole King one of the Super hooligan racers worked with S&S built a long pipe exhaust. Says it tested to make power it comes under the swing arm, he used the vacated space to add the 50lbs of ballast required to meet the minimum weight of the series. Id be interested to see how that is plumbed where it’s not visible under the swinger. I think it’s been mentioned in this thread as well I’m surprised there hasn’t been a manufacturer whose used the cat cavity to make a loop to lengthen the exhaust path like has been done for the fz-09 pipe From Akra.

I'm going to take a guess as to why. Return on Investment.
Hi there. New owner of 890 R for three weeks. Love the bike except for my right heel in an awkward angle with the stock exhaust.

For those of you with the SC Project S1 exhaust, I have a question specifically about the comfort of your right foot/right heel. On the stock exhaust, when I am on the ball of my feet, my right heel is constantly on the heat shield and my ankle is forced out in a weird angle, which is driving me crazy and also causing some discomfort.

Would anyone with the SC Project S1 exhaust be able to take a top down view picture of your Duke with the exhaust? I took one below with the stock OEM exhaust and the green arrow indicates where my heel is hitting the heat shield. No problem on the left side of the bike at all. I have been riding on the balls of my feet for ages and also don't want to scrape my boot in the twisties or the track.

From various pictures of the S1 exhaust it seems smaller than the stock, so I am hoping I would not have this heel issue, but just want to make sure before I pull the trigger on ordering one. I personally could care less about the sound or the look or the performance gain. This is a pure comfort thing now and the SC Project S1 does look good.

Thanks in advance if you can help me out.

Much better than stock with regard to angle of right foot but boot can still touch pipe at times. And pipe is a lot hotter than stock exhaust so can melt boot heel. I added an extension heat shield.

That's exactly what I was looking for. Thanks and much appreciated.

With reference to the extension heat shield, if you don't mind me asking, what did you get?

Made one up myself with intention of getting a final product done in stainless steel, but works well as is so did not bother yet. Absolutely helps with heat coming off the link pipe.

I went with IXIL on both my 390 and my new 890GP. Love it!

I’ve had to put my powerparts rearsets to the highest setting for clearance on track. Maybe I’ll try them more forward though to make a little space, thanks for the idea! I’m thinking about getting a shop to just cut the pipe and weld in a segment more inward bent.
Did you ever do this?

I use mine for 100% track duty and the boot clearance issue is my only real gripe with the bike.

I'm absolutely flabbergasted that no manufacturer has stepped up to the plate with a slip on that has a small bend to it for boot clearance. Seems like such an easy fix.
Has anyone any idea if the 790 akra slip-on is the same as the 890? Part number is different.. due to homologation I guess. I found a good deal on a 790 one.
Responded to your PM.

I've heard the 790 slip-ons fit the 890s. I'm gonna feel pretty dumb if the 790 Akra slip-on has the one little bolt db-killer removal. Coulda saved $$$ and aggravation.

Swapped to the Akra full system and have had zero boot melt issues since. Rear sets are in highest, most forward position.

We have a customer with the full Akra that's been willing to let me try out for a session. I may do just that. It's too bad the full Akra is so $$$$, but if it fixes the issue, at least it'll look amazing on the bike too for the money.

I too tried to refrain from spending the money for the first year as it’s a large chunk of change for exhaust (although they wanted $5k for my V2 akra so it could be worse). If I had to do it all over again though, I would buy the akra right off the bat and be done with it on the 890.

These are just my opinions of course but: no boot melt, clean/aggressive/perfect exhaust notes (I run baffle out), very improved power curve (love that you get a factory flash), and the bike looks complete aesthetically. I deft recommend riding one if you can. I wish I would of had the opportunity back then, would of made the decision that much easier.

How's the fuel consumption for street use though? Much higher? Thanks
I used to wish I had popped for the full Akra system on day one and actually tried to but couldn't find anyone that would sell me one in California. I've since gone with an Akra slip-on (with db killer) and Arrow cat delete with Coober LM. I believe this provides more low and midrange while leaving the top the same. My fuel mileage did not degrade.
