Loss of power

So my bike had to be towed from the track to the dealer after only 6 laps on a track day.

under no load (i.e neutral) the bike will rev as high as you want, as long as you move the throttle slowly.
Any fast movement of the throttle results in a stall (either up or down).
The bike struggles to start, but will start.

when trying to ride you can maybe coax it up to 40kmh an hour but that's your lot. as if it has burnt the clutch or is missing a cylinder or spark.

For the detectives:
The engine sounds normal
the bike wheels easily in neutral (so not a drive train jam)
it does it in neutral (so it's not the kick stand sensor)
you can stall it easily by letting the clutch out (so not a broken clutch)
you can stall it in neutral (so not a gearbox or drivetrain issue)
it will start and rev (so not an ecu issue)
there is no engine warning light (not limp mode)
temperature is normal, will do it from warm or cold
i have removed the key and left it off for an hour, no change.
you can hear the fuel pump and you can feel the butterfly valve responding to the throttle position
no visibly loose wires or plugs
no damage to the bike (it was not dropped)
no 'hissss' of the fuel cap when i opened it (meaning no vacuum lock on the tank)

My bet is the fuel filter, i say this because the day before i ran out of petrol and had to walk to the garage (top of a hill) and borrow a fuel can. The fuel can was empty but i wonder if it had crap in it that has now blocked the filter. The dealer doesn't think this is likely as it's only just had it's 1000k service and i rode at least 50K's to work, home and then to the track next day before the problem happened.

i'm away for the next two weeks, so you have plenty of time to guess before i get back.
If you know what it is, chime in here and i'll let the dealer know.

Plugged fuel filter would be my bet. Similar thing happened to my 1090 when the filters plugged.

I agree. Sounds like it is being starved for fuel. If it cuts when you throttle quickly, then it sounds like it isn't getting enough fuel. Everything else you mentioned @magnets seems like it eliminates any other possibility.

so the plot thickens.

Bit of background. the bike broke the day before i flew to foreign for a bit. I explained very clearly to Procycles in sydney that i was not in a hurry for the bike to be fixed.
however, they were too busy and they shipped my bike up to hornsby pro cycles to be fixed. without telling me.

i rang hornsby, apparently they don't know what's wrong with the bike, they have noticed some wear on a cam and KTM have advised them to completely strip the engine. They have not provided me with a replacement bike nor can they tell me when i'll get my bike back.

The poor chap i spoke to about a loaner bike asked got shouted at by someone else and told to "get them to fucking ring ktm we just fix em not fucking about with anything else", proper shouting too.

And of course KTM doesn't have a number you can call, you have to fill in that amazingly annoying web form. Which i did, which feels about a useful as pissing into the wind.

This isn't the first time I've heard about abnormal cam wear on the 790. Hope you get it sorted soon!

I picked up a loaner bike from the dealer today.
My bike is likely to be off the road for at least 3 weeks.

I have been given a suzuki Gladius. I miss the quickshifter already.

it's comfy though.

Awesome that they gave you a loaner, and a v-twin no less, so you can still have fun!
